Birthdays always carry with them sweet memories, especially those cherished days of childhood that one wishes to relive even after outgrowing them. In our school, kids would don colorful dresses and carry around 62 Nutrine 5-paise chocolates wrapped in dark green bunny image wrappers, along with five more expensive eclairs chocolates reserved for teachers. Unfortunately, I never had the chance to experience this, as my birthday always fell during summer holidays.

As we grow older, some of us tend to transform the nature of these days, even though they remain days of joy for most. I, too, shifted gears on this very day over 20 years ago and embarked on a wild goose chase—pursuing what I termed “weird milestones.” Some pursuits were extraordinary, leaving behind scars, while most provided pleasant learning experiences. Many goals still remain unachieved, and on this day, I am preparing to chase yet another.

பண்டிகை மகிழ்ச்சியை
மிஞ்சிய நாளிது பள்ளிக்காலங்களில்

பெரிதாய் பண்டங்கள் பார்த்ததில்லை 
வண்ண ஆடைகள் வாங்கியதில்லை
தாய் மாமனின் வாழ்த்திற்கு
காத்திருந்த நாட்களவை

நாற்பத்தி நான்கு வருடங்களை
பின்னோக்கிப்பார்க்கிறேன்
பசுமையில் பல
பெருமையில் சில

சராசரி மனிதனின் முழு உருவம் நான்
கடைசி benchன் கண்ணிய மாணவனாய்
கடமைக்கே புத்தக மூட்டையென
பரிசுகள் காணா பள்ளி நாட்கள்

விழித்தெழுந்த  தருவாயில்
கல்லூரி நாட்கள் நெருங்கின
உறங்கிப்போன நாட்களை
முழி பிதுங்க, கண்விழித்து,
துரத்திப்பிடித்தேன்

இருபது வருடங்கள்
முன்பு இதே நாளில்
நட்டேன்  முதல் மைல்கல் - சாதனை எட்ட
எட்டாத கற்களை 
ஒவ்வோர் பிறந்தநாளும் 
புதுப்பித்து ,
முன்னகர்த்தி ,
மீண்டும் நட்டேன்
இக்கற்களை தொடத்தவறி
அள்ளிச்சேர்த்த
விழுப்புண்களும் , வடுக்களும் 
புகட்டியது  பாடங்களே!

இன்று
மற்றுமோர் பிறந்தநாளில்
கடக்கத்தவறிய அக்கல்லை
மீண்டும் நட்டு 
என்றேனும் ஒர் நாள்
கடந்ததை திரும்பிப்பார்ப்பேனென
ஒடத்தயாராகிறேன் - மூச்சை உள்வாங்கி.
